      Narrator Nancy Wu returns for Book 6 of the Timber Creek K-9 series as Colorado deputy Mattie Cobb and her canine sidekick, Robo, investigate a murder. Maddie herself finds the body while hiking near Hanging Falls. Then, Robo's tracking abilities lead her through the woods to a vagabond who may have witnessed more than he wants to admit. Wu's portrayal of Maddie--gentle toned and thoughtful--obscures Maddie's rugged backcountry and law enforcement traits. Wu uses a more sonorous, plodding tone for most of the men in the story, with angry undertones for a suspicious pair of brothers and the leaders of a conservative religious cult. Fascinating information about the training and handling of police dogs makes up for the obvious mystery plot. Laden with a heavy dose of family drama, this entry will most please established fans.
